Biography Of Sai Baba
Introduction
Sai Baba also known as Shirdi Sai Baba, is a beloved spiritual leader of Hindu and Muslim devotees throughout India and in expatriate communities such as the United States and the Caribbean. The name Sai Baba comes from Sai, a Persian word used by Muslims to denote a holy man, and Baba, a Hindi word for father.
Sai Baba’s early years are a mystery. Most accounts refer to his birth as a Hindu Brahmin and later adoption by a Sufi fakir or hermit. In later life, he claimed to be a Hindu guru. Sai Baba reached Shirdi in the western Indian state of Maharashtra and lived there until his death in 1918. In the year 2008, India Post issued a postage stamp of rupees 5 to honor Sai Baba.
Early Life Of Sai Baba
- Sai Baba was a famous saint in India and around the world. His birth is a mystery, but some believe that he was born in Pathri, Maharashtra. Pathri is a small town in the Parbhani district. There is not much information about his parents. Some scripts state that he was born into a family but was given away to a ‘fakir’. He is said to have returned to Shirdi at the age of sixteen. According to some sources, he went somewhere far away from Shirdi, but after two years he returned to Shirdi and was seen meditating under a tree. Baijyabai, the village head’s wife, regularly brought food for Sai. This went on for so long that it became a maternal bond. Many people used to make fun of his clothes because he used to wear a huge piece of cloth. The children scoffed at him and made fun of him, throwing stones at him. Yet there were some who sought his advice and learned great life lessons from him. He used to eat food by begging in every house. He used to lead a simple life as much as possible. Sai’s real name is not known. People started calling him ‘Fakir’ and later he came to be called Sai.
Spiritual Life Of Sai Baba
- Sai was a great saint. He believed that God is everywhere and that one should not be afraid of anything. They firmly believed that God (Allah) would take care of their children. Shraddha (faith in God) and Saburi (patience) were the two pillars of his teaching. He also used to say that every pain heals with time. One must have faith in God because He has written the best for everyone. He also taught the lesson of forgiveness. He also taught his believers the power of empathy. His book ‘Shri Sai Sachcharitramanas’ is one such book that mentions all his teachings and lessons and various stories. His famous words were ‘Sabka Malik Ek’. He used to teach Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagavad Gita etc. to his devotees.
Miracles Of Sai Baba
There are many stories of Sai in which one can see miracles happening. Some of them are mentioned below.
Sai used to go from house to house asking for food by saying “Bhiksham Dehi”. If the woman refused, saying that she herself did not have food to feed her family, Sai told her to go and check her kitchen. And what is surprising is that the woman used to have a kitchen pile of food. Then with respect and love, he happily fed food to Sai. In this way, Sai used to help the needy and poor without asking.
Once Baba started digging the roots of the neem tree and seeing them all the villagers started digging. People’s faith and belief in Sai were so high that they used to follow him no matter what. He was a role model for all except a few who, out of greed and envy, did not love him much. After digging for some time, people saw a slab made of stone and suddenly the oil lamps were shining without oil. Everyone was shocked and bewildered. There was a pot in the shape of a cow’s mouth. Sai said that this is the place where her guru did penance. He also said that instead of worshipping me, worship this place and this tree. It is one of the must-visit places in Shirdi. To date, no one has touched the tree and it is worshipped with full faith in the hearts of the people.
Prayag is a holy place where Ganga and Yamuna meet. It is believed that taking a bath in Prayag washes away all the sins of a person. So, once Das Ganu had a wish and thought of going to Prayag and taking a holy bath there. He discussed this with Sai. To this Sai said that you need not go anywhere, as this is the holy place that you are looking for. When he touched Sai’s feet, Ganga and Yamuna were flowing from his feet. Seeing this, Das Ganu was very happy.
Once on the day of Diwali, Sai was sitting near Dhuni. He was getting heat by burning wooden logs. Then he burnt his hands by pushing them into the dhuni with wooden sticks. His servant Madhavrao saw this and rushed to help him. Baba told that somewhere far away a woman was working in a furnace. When her husband called her, she forgot that her child was tied to her waist. Then the child accidentally fell into the furnace and was saved by Sai by holding him and burning his hand.
Sai used to light diyas (lamps) every day. He used to ask the shopkeepers for oil. Once they all decided not to apply Sai’s oil. They were all eagerly waiting for Sai’s next move. Sai went quietly and poured water into the lamps or diyas. And to everyone’s surprise, they were lighting up the room with a bright light.
There was a problem of water scarcity in Shirdi. People gathered and went to Sai for help. All the wells had dried up, and they had to face a lot of problems due to lack of water. Sai placed a drop of water on his palm and asked the people to throw the water into the well. Surprisingly, the drop of water turned into a beautiful flower. And later on, the water level in the well started rising. Everyone was happy and amazed by this miracle of Sai.
Once upon a time, there was a very good yield in all the fields. A man came to Sai and Sai told him that his farm was on fire. The man went and looked but there was no fire in his fields. He again went to Sai and told her that his farm was not on fire. Sai again asks him to go to his fields and check again. The man then went to his field and saw that his field was on fire. Everyone tried to extinguish the fire but did not get success. Suddenly, Sai sprinkled a handful of water and all the fire was extinguished.
One day, Sai’s guru Vakunsha asked him to bring milk from a black cow. Sai went out in search of a black cow. Then he found a black cow, but the owner of the cow said that the cow does not give milk. Sai put his hand on the cow and said that the man should milk it and see whether milk comes or not. The owner started milking the cow. And to his surprise, the cow gave him milk. Sai took the milk and gave it to her guru.
Rai Bahadur once came to Shirdi with his family. The day he was returning to his home it started raining. It was raining so hard that it was impossible to go. But he had to go to his city immediately. He requests Sai to stop the rain so that he can reach home safely with his family. And as he said, Sai opened her hands and stopped the rain.
One day Baba Kirvandikar’s daughter fell into the well. She was then three years old. She was asking for help. The people of the village came as soon as they heard the news of the place. To their surprise, they saw him in the air as if some hand was holding him and helping him out of the well.
