NEET (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test)
What Is NEET?
- NEET stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. It is conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency). It is the entrance exam for aspirants in the medical field. Those who wish to do medicine – MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BUMS, BHMS, etc must appear and qualify for the entrance exam NEET UG. As per the Supreme Court’s order in 2016, NEET would be the only examination to fill the All-India Quota Seats as well as the State Level Quota Seats across the country. The examination is also valid for filling admission to private college seats too. Earlier for admission to AIIMS and JIPMER, their special entrance examination would be conducted. But from the year 2019 for admission to AIIMS and JIPMER too, NEET is the only option.
History Of NEET
- NEET-UG replaced the All-India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) and many other state-level examinations like mh-cet, kcet, etc, and university-level examinations in 2013. Except for 2014 and 2015, NEET-UG is successfully conducted. The NEET-UG is conducted by NTA from 2019 onwards. Before it was conducted by CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education).
Why NEET Replaced AIPMT
Quota: AIPMT used to occur for 15% of all India seats. So, students must prepare for 85% state quota seats as well as 15% AIPMT seats.
Different syllabus: Students must prepare a state syllabus for state examinations and for AIPMT there was no exact syllabus, but it was NCERT based. So, there was always a sense of confusion among students as to what to and from where to study.
Irregularities by CBSE: The AIPMT was conducted by CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) and state exams were under respective state authorities. Because of some reason, cheating and fraud increased so much that a new testing agency was made in 2017 which would be taking some examinations to reduce the burden of CBSE as CBSE was conducting lots of examinations. In 2016, because of the paper leak exam was held twice. This leads to injustice to lots of innocent students, re-exams, late counseling, and late admission.
Contraversy Of NEET
- There are cases where on exam day a member of a cheating gang writes the paper of a student and demands 5-10 lakhs of it. Recently, in 2022 CBI found out that medical seats were sold for Rs 20 to Rs 25 lakh. In Karnataka too such scam was caught in 2019. In such scams, many doctors, and undergraduate medical students are seen to be involved. Some frauds take the money and promise a medical seat but run away with the money. In 2020, in Chennai, a girl forged a NEET scorecard to get a medical seat. We can read such cases now and then in newspapers. Because of such cases, the examination paper gets leaked, and then re-exams occur because of injustice to lots of other students. This leads to lots of academic problems further. Because of such cases, strict screening on exam day is observed.
