1. Nehru Institute Of Mountaineering
It is one of the most prestigious institution for mountaineering in the Asia. It is situated at Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand in India. It was established on 14th November, 1965 in honour of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India.
The main aim of Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) is to introduce young generation (men, women and school going children) to the mountains and nature through various mountaineering courses (Basic, Adventure and advance).

2. Himalayan Mountaineering Institute
The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute was set up in the year 1954, in Darjeeling, West Bengal, India.
Himalayan Mountaineering Institute was set up with an intention to encourage Mountaineering as organized sports in India.
Himalayan Mountaineering Institute was built to give a tribute to Tenzing Norgay.
Tenzing Norgay was the first Field Director of HMI (Himalayan Mountaineering Institute).

Eligibility For Different Courses In HMI :-
Trainee should be able to communicate, understand and read either Hindi or English language.
(1) For Advance Mountaineering Course:-
Trainees must possesses ‘A’ grade in Basic Mountaineering Course from HMI Darjeeling, NIM Uttarkashi, ABVIMAS Manali, SGMI Gangtok, ITBP Training Centre Auli.
(2) For MOI:-
Trainees must possesses ‘A’ grade in Advance Mountaineering Course can apply and trainee minimum qualification must be passed class 12th .
(3) For Search & Rescue:-
Trainees must possesses ‘A’ grade in Advance Mountaineering Course can apply and trainee minimum qualification must be passed class 12th .
(4) For Any Expedition:-
Trainees should have completed Basic Mountaineering Course with ‘A’ grade.
3. Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute Of Mountaineering And Allied Sports
Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports is often abbreviated as (ABVIMAS). It is located in Manali, Himachal Pradesh and was set up as the western Himalayan mountaineering institute but later on it was renamed after our former PM of India honorable Atal Bihari Vajpayee and it was established in the year 1961. ABVIMAS is one such Institution was provides core specialized training in the arena of rescue and search missions, mountaineering and in Skiing.
ABVIMAS offers various courses in Mountaineering, skiing and water sports and the courses are as follows:-

4. Jawahar Institute Of Mountaineering And Winter Sports
Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports also abbreviated as JIM&WS.
JIM&WS was established in the year 1983 at Aru in Jammu & Kashmir.
JIM&WS was set up with an objective to provide various adventures activities at one place.
JIM&WS is also known as the Trekker’s Paradise.
JIM&WS offers rock crafting, ice crafting, river rafting, paragliding, steam crossing and Basic and Advance level Mountaineering courses.
The Defense Minister acts as the president while the Chief Minister of J&K acts as the Vice President of the Institute.
JIM&WS is always headed by an armed forces officer of the rank of Colonel or equivalent. And the Instructors are drawn from all three wings of armed forces and are generally of the rank of JCO (Junior Commissioned Officer) or NCO (Non Commissioned Officer).
Expeditions :-
(1) Stok Kangri:-
Mt. Stok Kangri is located in Ladakh. It is 6135 m above the sea level. In the year 2008, the expedition was launched for police personnel to give training in Basic and Advanced Mountaineering Skills.
(2) NUN:-
Mt. Nun is located in Zaskar region in Kashmir. It is 7135 m above the sea level.The first expedition on Mt. Nun from JIM&WS was made in the year 2005 and the second Expedition was made in the year 2007 by Jammu and Kashmir armed police force. And the team comprising of Jammu & Kashmir Armed Police and JIM&WS experts.
(3) Kolahoi:-
Mt. kolahoi is located in Pahalgam. It is 5427 m above the sea level. Mt. Kolahoi is considered as on of the most technical peak. And Mt. Kolahoi is very much famous for ice crafting.
Awards :-
JIM&WS is honored with Indira Gandhi Priyadasrshini Vriksh Award in the year 2002.
Eligibility To Join JIM&WS :-
Students are advised to keep themselves fit before joining the Institute for actual training. They should be mentally as well as physically fit and able to with stand the rigors of snow and high altitude.

5. Indian Institute Of Skiing And Mountaineering :-
Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IIS&M) was established in the year 1969. IIS&M is located at Gulmarg under controlled by Department of Tourism, Government of India.
IIS&M is specialized in training skiers and mountaineers all over the world. Trainees from all over the world visits IIS&M to seek training.
As IIS&M was founded in the year 1969 with an objective to promote winter sports in Gulmarg under the project name Gulmarg winter Sports Project (GWSP) and also an initiative to develop ski resorts of International standards.
Courses Provided By The Institute :-
The IIS&M provides various courses. And courses are as follows:-
(1) Skiing,
(2) Paragliding,
(3) Paramotors,
(4) Hot air blooning,
(5) White water rafting,
(6) Mountaineering.
Beside the available courses IIS&M is one of the best place for adventure as there are many adventures thing are available like snow scooters and groomers for snow-clad slopes, cable car is also available at gulmarg with an altitude of around fourteen thousand and it is placed at the highest in the world of its kind.
Annual snow festival is also very much famous in Gulmag every year many foreigners visits gulmarg and IIS&M attracts them .
How To Apply In Courses :-
There are altogether six courses offered by Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering. Interested candidates are required to apply in advance as seats are allotted on ‘first come first serve’ basis.
(1) For admission in courses one need to visit the official website of IIS&M.

(4) Submit your application form along with full fees of Rs.6000 (below 25 years of age) and Rs.12000 (above 25 years of age).

Best Time For Skiing IIS&M:-
For Skiing (Basic/Intermediate/Advance) course starts every year in December and ends in mid march.
The course duration is around 14 days.
6. Pandit Nain Singh Surveyor Mountaineering Training Institute :-
Pandit Nain Singh Surveyor Mountaineering Training Institute is abbreviated as (PNSMTI).
Pandit Nain Singh Surveyor Mountaineering Training Institute is located in Musiyari, Uttarakhand.
Pandit nain Singh Surveyor Mountaineering Training Institute is a newly established Institute situated at altitude of 2200 meters above the sea level.
It is named after one of the great surveyor of his time Pandit Nain Singh who played a vital role during mid-nineteen century in the arena of Trigonometrical survey
Pandit Nain Singh Surveyor Mountaineering Training Institute is the second premier Institute in Uttarakhand after Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM).
It is one of the premier Institute which provide specialized training in Mountaineering.
The aim of the institute is to introduce young generation (men, women, and school children) to the mountain and nature.
The institute provides basic courses in skiing and mountaineering.
PNSMTI comes under Sports Ministry of Government of Uttarakhand.
As PNSMTI is one of the youngest training institute but does not have a proper campus but has started work with annual skiing courses.

Acceptance Rate :-
Acceptance rate is 30 students for skiing courses. And the courses are mainely for 2 weeks and generally started in the month of February.

The fees of the course is around 12000 and it is also subsidized by the states sports department. And the fee includes training cost, lodging, boarding, equipments, etc.
7. National Institute Of Mountaineering And Allied Sports :-
National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports also abbreviated as (NIMAS). NIMAS was established in the year 2011.
It is located in Dirang, west kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. It is situated at an altitude of around 7000m above the sea level.
It is an autonomous Institute which falls under the Ministry of Defense, India. NIMAS was founded by Government of Arunachal Pradesh in the year 2011.
The principle of NIMAS will be from Armed Forces (Army, Navy and Air force).
The aim of NIMAS is to provide the best adventure and also being the first adventure institute in the field of land, water and air –it allows civilians to express challenges across variety of outdoor surface as well as pursue a career in adventure sports.
NIMAS is India’s first adventure Institute in the field of land, air and aqua.

Eligibility :-
(1) Basic Mountaineering Course : Must be Physically and mentally fit. The trainee should not have undergone any major surgery or suffering from seizures, high blood pressure, heart related diseases, fracture or ligaments tear of knee.
(2) Advance Mountaineering Course : Trainees who possesses ‘A’ grade in Basic Mountaineering course from NIMAS; Dirang, HAWS : GULMARG (J&K), NIM : Uttarkashi, HMI : Darjeeling, JIM : Pahalgam (J&K) and ABVIMAS
(3) Method of Instruction and Search & Rescue Course : Trainees who possesses ‘A’ grade in Advance Mountaineering Course from NIMAS, Dirang, HAWS, Gulmarg (J&K), NIM, Uttarkashi, HMI, Darjeeling, JIM, Pahalgam (J&K) and ABVIMAS Manali.
(4) Para Motor Course : The students applying for Para Motor course should be physically strong and capable of carrying Para Motor on their back weighing approx 20 kilograms.
(5) Para-gliding Course (P1 & P2 Level): This course is open to all, who doesn’t possesses acrophobia.
(6) Paragliding Course (P3 Level) : Trainees who possessed ‘R’ for P3 Level in Basic & Advance Paragliding (P1 & P2 Level) from NIMAS, Dirang or any other reputed Institute.
(7) Expedition Course : Those trainees who have obtained ‘A’ grade in Basic & Advance Mountaineering Course from any National Institute. Persons who have done mountaineering courses from NIMAS will be given preference.
(8) Mountain Terrain Biking Courses : Physically and mentally fit. MTB equipment including high end bikes will be provided to the students during the course. Advance course is for trainees who have obtained ‘A’ Grading in Basic Mountain Terrain Biking from NIMAS, Dirang or any other reputed Institute.
(9) White Water Rafting Courses : Physically and mentally fit. The trainees must know how to swim. Rafting equipments will be provided to the students during the course by the institute. Intermediate course is for trainees who have obtained ‘A’ Grading for Basic White Water Rafting from NIMAS, Dirang or any other reputed Institute.
(10) Scuba Diving Course : The trainees must know how to swim (100M). Acclimatization routine will be followed during High Altitude Scuba Diving course. Scuba diving equipment will be provided to the students during the course by the institute. To be eligible for adv course the trainee should be Basic Scuba Course qualified from NIMAS/Army/ Navy/ PADI/SSI. For High Altitude Scuba diving course adv course is manadatory.

8. Sonam Gyatso Mountaineering Institute, Gangtok, Sikkim :-
Sonam Gyatso Mountaineering Institute also abbreviated as SGMI. SGMI is located in Gangtok, Sikkim.
The Sonam Gyatso Mountaineering Institute was established in the year 1963.
SGMI falls under Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.
SGMI trains people to become professional mountaineers. SGMI has trained notable mountaineers also such as Phu Dorjee, Yangdi Sherpa, etc.
In SGMI, there are two types of courses offered and they are as follows:-
(1) Advance Mountaineering Course (AMC):- Those who have Completed Basic Mountaineering Course with A grade can apply for Advance Mountaineering Course.
(2) Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC)
9. Nepal Mountaineering Association :-
Nepal Mountaineering Association is also abbreviated as NMA. NMA was Established in 1973 with an Objective to Promote Mountain tourism as safe tourism.
NMA is a non-governmental organization which work as national alpine to promote mountain tourism, climbing sports, protect mountain environment and to also promote and protect national cultural heritage of Nepal.
NMA is the only Mountaineering Association which is authorized to issue climbing permission to 27 peaks in Nepal.
NMA has seven major objectives :-

For Basic Mountaineering Training :-
» Mandatory requirement to enter into Basic Mountaineering Training are:-
(1) Citizenship Xerox and Identity card.
(2) Recommendation letter which shows 2 years minimum experience.
(3) Clear picture of any successful ascent of any mountain or trekking pass.
(4) Basic first aid course certificate.
(5) Introductory Rock climbing course certificate.
For Foreign candidates, 3 days introductory rock climbing courses will be provided.
Training fees :-
Fees for BMT is $3000.00 USD for one participant.
For Nepalese Candidate: Only Rs15000 will be charged. Other cost are Insurance cost, medical and evacuation (these costs are not excluded).
For Foreign Candidates: $3000USD
Fees payment will be deposited in NMA’s Bank account.
For Advance Mountaineering Training :-
Candidate must possesses A grade In BMC.
In AMC the training duration generally comprises of 40 days training with 10 days of theoretical training. Its generally conducted in the month of December- January.

(a) Passport size photo 1 pc
(b) Citizenship Xerox
(c) Recommendation letter from trekking agency registered at NMA
(d) BMC certificate.

For Mountain Guide Training :-
- For Mountain Guide Training one needs to qualify entrance exam.
» To be eligible for entrance exam:-
(a) Above 18 years of age.
(b) Good Physical Fitness
(c) Possesses high moral standards
(d) Possesses very good level of Mountaineering experience
Minimum Requirement for Entrance:-
As per NNMA guidelines, there is proficient preliminary requirement for aspirant guide course entrance examination.
» Each candidate has to accomplish climbing training and experience on alpine peaks and are as follows:–
(a) Climbing trekking experience
(b) Basic and advance trekking certificate
(c) Experience on 4 summits trekking
(d) Experience on one summit over 7000m including two camps in height.
For High Mountain Rescue Training :-
Mountain Rescue Training are very expensive training. Even though they are very much in demand. At mountain region, there is always a need of rescue team.

Qualification :-
Minimum Educational Qualification Is Class 10th .
Physical Fitness :-
Trainees should be in good physical condition prior to join any course.
Taking long walk on uneven tracks with 10 – 15 kg load is preferable.
Long distance running and regular arms exercise will prove to be beneficial.
A test to qualify 15 kilometer trek with 15 kg load may be taken before a trainees is accepted in the Basic Mountaineering Course at high altitude areas / Mountains.
