  • It is affiliated with UGC (University Grants Commission) and AIU, with a current enrolment of 39,367 students and 170,000 alumni.

  • This century-old university is one of the most prestigious colleges in India and has also been considered an institute of national importance as declared under the seventh schedule of the Constitution of India at its commencement.

Founder

Founder of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan- 13angle.com
  • Sir Syed Ahmed Khan was one of the architects of modern India and he was a great reformer. He was among the first visionaries to recognize the importance of education and scientific knowledge, and how it was going to impact India in the future.

  • The 1857 revolt and the Aligarh Movement (the movement associated with Sir Ahmad and the college) made him realize that Muslims ought to acquire a high level of proficiency in English and modern science if they wanted to succeed.

  • With this in his mind, The Aligarh Institute Gazette, an organ of the Scientific Society, was launched in March 1866, and to prevent opposition by the Muslims he launched another journal by the name of Tehzibul Akhlaq, named in English as Mohammedan Social Reformer.

  • His great vision and his attempts of combining the West with the East are what make him an exceptional leader.

History

  • After the revolt of 1857, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan realized that the Muslims had to be educated in English and modern science to remain socially and politically involved and established.

  • When the British decided to replace and remove the Persian language from the government and the state, Sir Ahmad knew then that the Muslim’s future lay in adopting the Western Culture and English. He wanted fellow Muslims to look beyond the traditional Islamic teachings and embrace modern education.

  • He took his first steps towards his vision by setting up schools in Moradabad in 1858 followed by one in Ghazipur in 1863.

  • A Scientific Society was formed in 1864 to translate the Western knowledge written in English into local languages and to create an interest in science in the minds of people.

  • The Muhammedan Civil Service Fund Association was set up by Sir Ahmad to sponsor the travel of Muslims to London to take the ICS exam.

  • His next step was to establish the MAO college which he successfully did, despite several obstacles, in 1877.  Eventually, it became the infamous Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) as we know it today in 1920 after the AMU Act was passed, 22 years after Sir Ahmad’s death.

  • The MAO College was patterned after the Oxford and Cambridge Universities in London. He was inspired to follow the patterns after his visit to London. His main objective was to combine Western Education with traditional Islamic teachings.

Obstacles Faced

  • Sir Ahmad faced several obstacles to establishing MAO some of which are:

1. Lack of Funds

One of the major obstacles was the lack of funds for establishing the university. A committee was formed by the name, The Foundation of Muslim College, and people were asked to donate. Some of the prominent figures who gave the donations were:-

  1. Then Viceroy and Governor-General of India, Thomas Baring gave a donation of ₹10,000
  2. The Lt. Governor of the North-Western Provinces contributed ₹1,000
  3. Maharao Raja Mahamdar Singh Mahamder Bahadur of Patiala contributed ₹58,000
  4. Raja Shambhu Narayan of Banaras donated ₹60,000.
  5. Donations also came in from the Maharaja of Vizianagaram as well.
  • By March 1874 funds for the college stood at ₹1,53,920

  • In the year 1918, The seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan donated ₹5,00,000 to AMU.

2. Opposition by Orthodox Muslims

Sir Ahmad strongly advocated the use of English and Science which didn’t seem to be a pleasure for some orthodox Muslims.
