Detroit Tigers broadcaster Matt Shepard made an awkward comment on air during a game against the Cleveland Guardians at the weekend.
The cameras of the broadcast cut to a woman in the stands wearing a Guardians jersey and a cap with a white veil on the back – seemingly at a bachelorette party during the ballgame.

Shepard was reading a promo, but chose to comment on the woman in the stands with a fairly innocuous statement.
‘She’s about to get married, right? That’s why she’s got that outfit on, right? And she’s at a baseball game. Good for her,’ Shepard said.
But when the camera cut back to her drinking a beer, that’s when the broadcaster quipped, ‘Nothing sexier than a girl drinking a Leinenkugel’ – referring to the beverage in her hand.

Fans on social media were quick to scold Shepard for his comments and
The comment generated plenty of negative reaction on social media with people made uncomfortable by the announcer’s comments.
‘Whole lot of sad sack dudes in the replies wondering what the big deal is, and while this is far from the worst thing a broadcaster has done, it’s still skeevy as hell and wholly unnecessary. I can just hear the director’s annoyed sigh after they laugh.’
‘Women cannot exist without some guy feeling the overwhelming need to comment on what she’s wearing, who she’s with, or what she’s doing. This woman deserved better from this broadcast @Tigers.’
A man who cheers for the University of Michigan said, ‘Can we please, for the love of god, get someone else.’
Another Twitter user simply remarked, ‘Cringeworthy commentary.’
In AwfulAnnouncing’s ranking of the MLB broadcasts booths in 2023, Shepard and the Tigers finished dead last.
