NEW DELHI: Who will lead the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025? This question remains unanswered, as the franchise has yet to announce their captain for the upcoming season. Star batter KL Rahul has emerged as the leading contender to take over the team’s captaincy after being acquired for Rs 14 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
However, former India batter Aakash Chopra has voiced his support for all-rounder Axar Patel to captain the DC in the IPL.
Chopra compared Delhi Capitals’ captaincy dilemma to that of Kolkata Knight Riders, who released their title-winning skipper Shreyas Iyer ahead of the auction.
He believes Axar commands immense respect in the dressing room and has been one of the franchise’s most underrated performers.
“Who will be the captain? Their situation is like KKR. It could be Axar Patel. I don’t mind him being the captain. If you give me the option, I would say make Axar the captain. He is extremely underrated, very mature, fantastic performer, and he will run the team very well. He is someone who will command respect,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
He also mentioned Faf du Plessis as a possible choice, though unlikely to start in the XI, as the franchise used the Right to Match card for Jake Fraser-McGurk.
“KL Rahul could be the other option. The third could be Faf du Plessis if they wish so, but they might not play Faf from the start because they used the Right To Match card for Jake Fraser-McGurk. So I am thinking between Axar and Rahul but the management hasn’t given any clarity yet. My vote goes towards Axar because his performances on this ground have been exceptional,” he added.
