Aniket Badame talks about his short film Dum Biryani which addresses terrorism and as kids as its main cast. He emphasises on the reasons behind making the film and how he plans to take the film forward.
Tell me about your short film Dum Biryani.
Dum biryani is the film which is made for reason .. as a first time director I wanted to make a film which will not categorised any age bar .. a film which will be relatable to every age and more importantly relatable and need of an hour for the society.
Why did you to choose a film on terrorism and the tiffin bomb any reason behind it?
Terrorism is the biggest enemy of unity.. it not jus takes life but also shatters our unity as a nation. Tiffin is the metaphor to the suspense inside the film .. while people expects the obvious we gave them a twist inside it.
Dum Biryani is very heavily mounted for a short film…
Short film is the upcoming space where every film maker can showcase their talent and I personally wanted to showcase my skills of storytelling.. so as a producer of the film it helped the director in me and director in me could do justice to the writer in me.
Why did you want to tell the story with kids as the medium?
Kids being the integral part of the film . As kids represent our future hope. As a kid we use to have pledge every single day of our school life and the first line in itself states ” India is my country and all Indians are my brothers and sisters” . We need to believe what has been taught all along our learning years and implement it .. also we do not support any act of terrorism or any people involved in it. Jo galat hai woh galat hai par galti ka koi Dharam nahi hota. We wanted to share a truth and no other medium than kids to represent the truth.
It is tough shooting with kids and there are certain rules that are needed to follow…
Yes it is tough to shoot with kids that too around 50 kids in one shot . But this generation kids they know there stuff they are not at all shy of facing cameras.. but get them in sync was the biggest task .. we took care of our kids on set .. we had special live counter food on sets we had whole school as a base camp so our kids can be safely play around when not shooting. As a green sea entertainment producer we tried every bit to get the best services to our cast and crew which includes good quality food , nice base camps and even vanity bus to get them ready.
You come from Sachin Kundalkar School of cinema. What have you learned from him and how different are you from him and your Steven Spielberg connection?
Having started my journey into production dept for a Hollywood movie ” The Hundred foot journey” which was produced by Steven Spielberg, Juliet Blake and Oprah Winfrey..I have learnt the value of having nice environment on set for cast and crew, learnt how to have a conviction in your story and from there to assisting Sachin Kundalkar , I have learnt the art of framing from him. Every creative individual have their forte , so can’t compare or differentiate between two individuals in terms of creativity but yes my storytelling is more of entertaining or you can say commercial zone film making rather than art film making..no offence who does believe in art but eventually you need commerce for sustainability.
How do plan to take Dum biryani forward?
As the media preview happened.. now we are looking forward to pitch this to few ott platforms , as I am new to this business it’s taking time to connect to the correct people but yes will definitely try or get this on Ott and also will send this to few prestigious film festivals including nationals and filmfare short category .
