Self-reliance doesn’t come just from thinking or by having enormous ideas in your head. It will only be possible if when some actions will be taken to make that happen and in taking such immense steps a lot of things are needed to be done. Like for instant some planning and a lot of financial and structure aspects are needed to be taken care of.
Now, speaking of Indian Defence Industry as much as vast this industry is, its policies still lack that “changing “element that can be proven as an asset for the Defence industry and helps in changing as well as in improving their efficiency and capability.

What the Indian government and Defence industry needs is to get better and a changing strategy and policies also. They need to focus more on the areas where advancement and improvement are required. In comparison to other countries, there are areas where our country still lacks the input of advanced technology whereas other countries fast forward and are not stuck on the same old strategy.
Although, in past few years things have been evolving for the Indian Defence sector too. The moment Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the “ATMA NIRBHATA” act it is proven to be a remarkable and encouraging movement in itself to promote sales sufficiency among the country’s citizens. This act not only carries and aim to play a self-producer role but also to become export-oriented in itself.
India is said to have the 5th largest Defence budget in the whole world yet 60% of the weapon system is being procured from foreign countries. The process of interpretation, as well as implementation, can be blamed for that as that’s where the actual problem lies and until every single person of Defence Industry will put their input in figuring out the problem and them fixing it on a permanent basis. It’s hard to say that “Self -reliance” can also become a reality for our country as if not some actions will be taken soon then it will be nothing more than an unfulfilled “distant dream” and the Prime Ministers effort will go in vain too.

Now the aspects on which Indian Defence Industry needs to work on are as follows-
- Defence manufacturing process lacks the attention from the side of stakeholders account as well as from Indian army account too.
- Even after having such a huge budget with them, they are still dependent. So, the reduction of the dependence on export and import for weapons is needed.
- The lack of trust among the private and government sectors needs to be fixed as a lot of problems can be solved with the help of the private sector but only if both sectors work together.
So all in all, we can say that the only way to achieve success and become “self-sufficient” in itself is to work on these issues.
