Chandigarh, June 24 (ANI): The depletion of water levels in the Bhakra Nangal Dam will pose further problems for many states in northern India which rely heavily on it for irrigation and drinking water.
With the monsoon delayed and warm conditions prevailing, the water level has dropped to 1,504 feet (450 meters), which is 90 feet low-level than of same period last year. The capacity of the reservoir was 6.03 million acre feet in 1963 which was reduced to 5.5 million acre feet in 1988, thereby causing a reduction of over half a million acre feet in a short span of only 25 years.

However, like all other river valley projects, the Bhakra Nangal project suffers from the problem of sediment accumulation. Water from higher elevations deposits its sludge at the bottom of the reservoir, reducing its water storage capacity.
