Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people based on their religious beliefs. Discrimination is a result of a stereotype embedded in one’s head based on where one grew up or from personal experiences. Religious discrimination occurs on a day-to-day basis in many parts of the world. Some common examples of religious discrimination include not hiring or firing an employee because of their religious beliefs, prioritizing or selecting people of the more accepting religion to do certain tasks or opportunities. Summing it up harassment in the form of insulting comments, humiliation, or any hostile behavior can be considered religious discrimination.
When we talk about religion, it means the belief in a god or many gods and activities, practices, rituals, and traditions connected with them. It could be the belief of a building, a concept, mythology, etc. There are various religions in the world, including Hinduism, Christianity, Muslim, Jewish, Islam, etc.

Most parts of the world including Asia, America, Africa, and Europe, are secular. This means that they, by law, guarantee the right to adopt a religion or belief of choice, and freedom. It could be individually, in a group, or a community with others, and in public or private to manifest one’s belief in worship, practice, observance or teaching. These laws exist to help prevent religious discrimination and maintain peace and harmony within the society. Despite the existence of such laws, many discrepancies are observed, which is ironic because religions are meant to conserve love and peace in society, but they result in violent riots and bloodshed. Many people undergo the aftermath of religious discrimination and face the consequences. The majority of the population sympathize with them, ultimately leading them to believe and agree to the fact that religious discrimination must be banned immediately. Yet, people use religion as a means and excuse to cause harm and hurt certain people of society.
Currently, the majority of the population believes that their religion is much superior to other existing religions. They pass judgments and insulting comments when they observe the rituals and practices of the different religions of society. They criticize the people who dress based on their religious beliefs. Religion is a very personal concept of one’s beliefs, which should not be blamed for the spike of religious discrimination. It is not religion itself that encourages discrimination, but it is the people who cannot tolerate differences in religions in a community that leads to discrimination. People should learn to evolve their current mindset to a more accepting mindset. People should learn to accept other religions while peacefully practicing their own. The encouragement of religion does not increase discrimination but it is the stereotypes fed to the youth and the observations made by them which fix their mindset. So no, religion doesn’t technically “encourage” discrimination, but it is used as a means of discrimination.
