Detectives have charged a 53-year-old man in relation to a serious sexual assault of a teenage girl that occurred over 30 years ago in Western Australia.

Around 3am on February 23, 1993, the man allegedly forced entry to a college on Stirling Highway in Nedlands.
The victim – a 19-year-old woman at the time – was asleep in her student accommodation when she was woken by the man in her room, who allegedly threatened the victim and then sexually assaulted her.

A forensic examination was conducted at the time of the assault which resulted in an unidentified DNA profile being found. This profile remained unidentified for 30 years.
Using ground-breaking investigative genetic genealogy techniques and through the expertise of the PathWest forensic biology department, a suspect was identified.
On July 3, with the assistance of the Australian Federal Police, the accused was arrested in Canberra.

The man has been charged with two counts of aggravated sexual penetration without consent and one count of burglary and commit.
He is due to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court on Friday.
