A Pakistan court acquitted former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Khan, on charges of unlawful marriage on Saturday, according to their lawyer Naeem Panjutha.
The court announced the ruling in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.
Khan, 71, and his wife, Bushra Khan, also known as Bushra Bibi, were sentenced to seven years in February after a court found them guilty of breaking Islamic law by failing to observe the required interval between Bibi’s divorce from a previous marriage and her marriage to Khan.
The acquittal comes as a significant legal victory for Khan, who has faced multiple legal challenges since his ousting from office. The ruling overturns the previous sentence and clears the couple of any wrongdoing regarding their marriage.
