Rajinikanth, a demi-god to his fans, turns every film release into a festival, including his latest police procedural Vettiayan, directed by TJ Gnanavel. The film began its journey at the box office with bang but post weekend the film has been slipping away at an alarming rate. The film collected Rs 104.75 crore in its four day weekend and over the next 3 days it added only Rs 14.2 crore, thus taking the overall collection of the film to Rs 118.95 crore. The film will be crossing Rs 120 crore mark by the end of its first week run.

Going by the last release of Jailer, Vettaiyan has underperformed in a major way. Jailer had minted Rs 225.65 crore in its first seven days, and its total run was of Rs 348.55 crore. And it seems unlikely that Vettaiyan would be able to cross even Rs 200 crore, although what Vettaiyan has done in Hindi is very interesting, as it has managed to beat the Hindi numbers of Jailer. After 7 days, Jailer had collected just Rs 1.9 crore, while Vettiayan is currently sitting at Rs 3 crore collection from its Rs 118.95 crore collection.

Despite the major improvement, Rajinikanth’s film is no match to Thalapathy Vijay’s past two films, as they minted nearly 4 times the money in Hindi in the same period. Vijay’s penultimate film The Greatest of All Time had collected Rs 10.7 crore while his film Leo: Bloody Sweet has earned Rs 15.3 crore in the same period.
Rajinikanth will now be seen in Lokesh Kanagraj’s Coolie, shooting for which will restart from this week.
