Reading up about age-old mysteries and thrillers, especially in cases of books or listening to podcasts dealing with the same, is one of my favorite pastimes. This, of course, included watching ‘The Tashkent Files.’

India’s history of the beginning of civilization, then the progress, and then the colonial period is something many in India have a basic knowledge about. With it, though, comes the knowledge and an idea about the bloodshed and innocents dying that took place, especially during the Partition and after it. The dark history of our country can never be forgotten.
Tashkent Files, released in the year 2019, was written and directed by Vivek Agnihotri, who was also one of the many producers of the film.
What The Movie Is All About?

How many of my dear readers remember the mysterious circumstances under which we lost our second Prime Minister after achieving independence? For those who might be unfamiliar with Lal Bahadur Shastri, he was Independent India’s second Prime Minister, after Jawaharlal Nehru. While in the office and as part of the Parliament, Shastri Ji was the one to bring about the White Revolution – milk revolution – in the country.

He died on the 11th of January, in the year 1966, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, which was then a part of the Soviet Union.
There wasn’t much evidence of foul play and it was declared that he had passed away due to natural causes, but many people, es[ecially his admirers and close family members refuse to believe it and suspect foul play. The reasoning behind them were quite a few, including the fact that the former Prime Minister had signed a war treaty just the day before as well as the fact that when his body arrived in the country for being cremated, it was black and covered, interestingly, in various cuts.
The Tashkent Files, named after the place where Shastri Ji lost his life, is about a female journalist, Raagini Phule, played by Indian actress Shweta Basu Prasad, receiving an anonymous tip that stated that the unfortunate passing of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri may not have been as natural as it was made out to be.

Being a journalist, Phule rushes in to investigate the story like a shark smelling blood from miles away. Joined on this thrilling, twisting adventure of finding and proving that Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri didn’t die of natural causes but rather that foul play was involved, we get enraptured by a dazzling, gripping tale of twists, turns, and politics at its highest.
It is said that this movie is well-enjoyed by anyone who likes politics or has an idea about it as well as for people obsessed with the genre of thriller and mystery.
The storyline is well-developed and acted out wonderfully by the actors. Each one of them has played their role, has become whom they were portrayed as, and that was so admirable and so enrapturing.

But a few problems too, about the movie, have to be addressed.

As will be noticeable when you watch the movie (or while you were watching the movie, for those who already have), it is quite disorienting that the music and songs utilized in the movie are not quite…how to put this? Do not do justice to the movie and its theme at all.
But the thing is that we want to watch a movie that is fine-combed for details, whose defense has no cracks. Unfortunately, ‘The Tashkent Files’ fails to do that. The facts portrayed in the movie couldn’t be verified, the heavy-duty film that the audience expects is not there.
The finesse, the details, and the small picture do not compliment the big picture, leaving the audience and viewers disoriented and often suffering from a whiplash of information overload. Because although the facts portrayed weren’t portrayed quite as clearly as they could have been, it does not change the truth that all the multiple portrayals of the information that are provided in the movie are scenarios that may or could have happened. The truth we will never know.
It is an amazing movie to watch, especially for those who enjoy fiction and love conspiracy theories. But it is not a good example of our history. Although covering an important mystery that may never be solved, the representation left a lot to be desired and also cannot be trusted as an accurate source of what truly happened.
But even with the critique, nobody can change the fact that it is an absolute masterpiece and that the hard work that all the actors and staff, and team involved in and with the movie really shines through. With all pros exist cons. Now it is up to our readers to see if they want to watch this movie or not.
