History
The history of the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) is nothing short of illustrious, spanning nearly seven decades. The idea of a Central Public Service Commission was proposed by the Lee Commission in 1923 for India, but it did not address the need for similar commissions in provinces. As a result, provincial governments were left with the authority to recruit and oversee their respective services as they deemed fit.
Upon the formation of Rajasthan, only three of the 22 covenanting states, namely Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Bikaner, had the institution of a Public Service Commission. However, after the integration of princely states, the Rajasthan Public Service Commission Ordinance, 1949 came into effect as per the publication dated 20th August 1949 in the Rajasthan Gazette. The ordinance specified that the RPSC would come into effect from the date of the official Gazette notification, which was eventually published on 22nd December 1949. This marked the establishment of the Rajasthan Public Service Commission, paving the way for its crucial role in the state’s governance.
The RPSC was initially composed of one Chairman and two Members. The esteemed Sir S. K. Ghosh, then Chief Justice of Rajasthan, assumed the role of the Chairman. Subsequently, Shri Devi Shankar Tiwari and Shri N. R. Chandorkar were appointed as Members, while Shri S. C. Tripathi (I.E.S), formerly a member of the Union Public Service Commission, took over as Chairman. Preliminary Exam Pattern:

Following the 2013 amendment, the preliminary exam now consists of one paper: General Knowledge and General Science (Objective). Earlier, candidates had to appear for two papers: ‘General Knowledge and General Science’ and one ‘optional subject’ of their choice. The current paper has a total of 150 questions, carrying equal marks, with a maximum of 200 marks. Candidates must complete the exam within the prescribed three-hour time limit.
Negative marking is applicable, with one-third (1/3) marks deducted for each wrong answer. If a candidate provides multiple answers to a question, it will be considered incorrect, even if one of the given answers is correct. However, if a question remains unanswered, no penalty is imposed.
Candidates generally need to score around 40-50% marks to pass this stage, but the passing percentage may vary based on the difficulty level of the questions. The question paper is available in both Hindi and English, with preference given to the English version in case of any language dispute.
The preliminary examination is of a qualifying nature, and the marks obtained here are not added to the mains exam or interview scores. It consists of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) with a total of 150 questions, each carrying 2 marks. The exam has a total of 300 marks and lasts for 3 hours.
Main Exam Pattern:
The mains examination is conducted in seven divisions of the state, namely Jaipur, Ajmer, Bharatpur, Kota, Bikaner, Jodhpur, and Udaipur. The Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) decides on various centers within these divisions for conducting the main examination.
In 2013, the RPSC made significant changes to the syllabus of the mains exam. Previously, candidates had to choose two optional subjects for the mains examination.
